Today was a long day… I won’t lie. It began at 8:20 this morning, oversleeping and wanting desperately to go back to sleep. Talked about that propoganda Hilter’s film in Broadcasting & Culture and ran (literally) to my office to watch the JGR announcement where I could feel my heartbeat in my throat…
I’m not going to lie and say that I was relieved hearing Tony say that he was looking forward to Toyota next year. Am I against foreign manufacturers? No, of course not. In fact, I want a Camry… I rent them all time when I travel to places further than 2 hours away because my truck sucks. Do I know Tony Stewart is a great bullshitter? Hell yes. Hearing him joke at the press conference made me feel better because it’s his passion and sense of humor that I love about him. Oh yeah, and his new hairstyle. Don’t cut the hair, Anthony.
After that, I grabbed a small pizza from the Loop, ran to Media Criticism where I used Junior and Budweiser as an example of something, causing people to laugh. Then went to Math Modeling where I felt like a complete idiot. Went to work for an hour and then up to the office to begin work on the newspaper.
So I was approached by a writer from the LA Times who is writing an article about female race fans and pit lizards. It got me to thinking a lot about it afterwards and all night at the office, my friends and I joked that I was one. I’m not… never was… never will be. I don’t look at the sport as a way to get a rich husband. I look at the sport as a way of life… a passion… an industry that I want to work in. I told him all this and her understood, but I sure did share my opinion on the pit lizards - past and present. I remember Junior’s PR guy Jade wrote this really funny peice a few years ago called “Death of the Pit Lizard” (or something to the effect (click here to read). I believe that was the article that the term “track bunny” was derived from.
And I talked it over with my newspaper advisers / journalism teachers about how employers look at that kind of stuff when hiring you now a days. They google you, look for you on myspace and facebook, and just seek you out and asked me if this was something that I would want to hide. To be honest, not really… it’s not. I’m not ashamed that racing is a passion of mine. I’m not ashamed that the sport fascinates me and I can’t get enough of it. I’m not ashamed that I find some of the driver’s more attractive than others and if they ever gave me the time of day that I would carry on a coversastion with them. I’m not ashamed that I would prefer to work in a stable environment over going to the track every weekend, but if I had to go to the track, I would. I don’t go to races dressed like a French whore in ten inch hills. I swear sneakers, shorts or jeans, a t-shirt or nice top and most of the time, my hair is in pigtails. I’m not there to land a man. I’m there to watch my driver win or kick major ass.
But I damn sure love giving my opinion on the subject of women like I’m discussing because they are the ones who give all female fans a bad reputation.
Now I must go to bed. I have Social Problems in the morning at 9:30 and I must run by the office before class to get something I printed out for Field Production 2. Then work until 6 and I think I have a radio station meeting at 8. Nighty night.
